Dr. Mihial Antchev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1955. He received the M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in Power Electronics from Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technology, Technical University - Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1981 and 1990, respectively. From 1981 to 1986, he worked as an engineer in Technical University -Sofia. During his first years as an engineer, he was sent in specialisation in London at Brunel University and in Moscow at Technical University - Moscow. From 1986 to 1993, he worked as assistant in Department of Power Electronics. In 1993, he became an associate professor in discipline Industrial Electronics. Currently, Dr. Antchev is an associate professor in Technical University - Sofia. From 1995 to1999, he was a vice-dean of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technology, TU - Sofia, and, during 1999-2005 - technical tutor of the College of Electronic Systems in Sofia with Technical University - Sofia. His special research interests are in power electronics devices, theirs energy factors, harmonics, compensation of reactive power, power quality, dynamics and control systems. He is author or co-author in more than 60 papers published in magazines, transactions and conferences. He is a member of Power Electronics Society and IEEE.

Xavier Carcelle holds a M.Sc. in Electrical Enginnering and a Teaching Degree in EE from the Ecole Normale Superieure of Cachan, France. Dr. Tuan Dang is a Senior Research engineer at "Performance Optimization of Industrial Process" Department of EDF R&D. He graduated his Ph.D from the "Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Paris" in 1994 and his engineering degree from the "Ecole Centrale de Nantes" in 1990. He has worked for Matra MS2i, Essilor International and Air Liquide in the field of signal processing and embedded systems, ophthalmic optical I&C, industrial information systems and telecontrol for On-site Gas Production before joining EDF R&D Division in 2001, where he has led a project on Telecontrol Infrastructure for Distributed Power generation. He is responsible for the animation of a core team in I&C for the EDF Group. His research interest concerns industrial messaging protocols and open system and communication architectures for automation.

Dietmar Dietrich became professor of Computer Technology at the ICT in 1992, and Head of the Institute in 1999. Prior to this, he worked in the air- and space industry (computer architecture and bus systems) and later in communication industry (mainly in ISDN development). In 1986 he was appointed as professor of Computer Science in Bielefeld (Germany). He focused his research on communication systems (especially on fieldbus systems) and ASIC design, also including built-in test systems, boundary scan, smart card technology, architecture of process control and control units for communication systems. Dietmar Dietrich is vice-president, convenor, chair and member (advisory board, ...) of various national and international organizations (OVE, OGMA, LNO...) and also delegate of the OVE and NO for CEN and CENELEC. In 1994 he founded the Center of Excellence for Fieldbus Systems, and initiated the, today internationally established in IFAC, Fieldbus Conference FeT in 1995. He has been a co-organizer of various tracks and conferences in IEEE (for example WFCS 2004 in Vienna). He has produced 120+ papers and books and international conference presentations.

José Alberto G. Fonseca (IEEE Member since 2000) was born in Aveiro, Portugal, in 1957. He graduated in electronics and telecommunications engineering and received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal, in 1980 and 1992, respectively. He has been an Associate Professor in the Electronics and Telecommunications Department of the University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal, since 2000. His current research interests are embedded systems, distributed real-time systems, and industrial communications. He has been coordinating several research projects funded by the Portuguese government in the field of distributed embedded systems and he participates in two European projects. Andreas Gerstinger was born in Graz in 1973, where he has also completed his academic studies. However, during this time, he has spent one year in a High School in North Carolina (USA), and one year at the Royal Holloway College in London (UK). He studied telematics (which is a combination of mainly computer science with some aspects of telecommunication technology) at the University of Technology in Graz. His master thesis was about the industrial application of the formal method VDM in software engineering. During this work, contact to the company Frequentis was established, where he has spent almost 6 years. He worked in the fields of System Safety, Reliability and Software Quality. Now he is employed at the Institute of Computer Technology, where he works in a project about Safety and Reliability for the companies Frequentis and Alcatel. One of the goals is the scientific research of practically relevant issues, and the further build-up of competence in this area in the institute.

Klaus Kabitzsch holds a Diploma and a Ph.D. (1982) in electrical Engineering and communications technology from the Ilmenau Technical University. After 1989 he worked at the universities in Leipzig and Dresden and focused his research on fieldbuses, distributed systems, real time software and automation. Klaus Kabitzsch became professor and head of the department of technical computer sciences in 1993 and vice dean of the faculty of computer science at the Dresden University of Technology in 2000. His current projects have their focus on wireless networks and their application in the automation domain, component based software design and performance engineering for fieldbuses, design tools for networked building automation, energy management in buildings and low power WPAN protocols. Friederich Kupzog was born in 1979 in Cologne, Germany. He attended secondary school at Hansa Gymnasium, Cologne before he did one year of alternative civilian service at Drogenhilfe Köln e.V. Charlotte Roesener has studied at Vienna University of Technology Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In November 2002 she graduated her master studies with distinction. The objective of her diploma thesis are special aspects of fault tolerance, in particular defect tracking systems in circuitry, network management, and fault tolerance in the human body (bionics). From May 2003 to March 2005 she worked as a scientific employee at the Institute of Computer Technology. The main focus on her scientific work was intelligent networks in building automation, autonomous behavior arbitration of mobile robots, and information technology for energy networks. She participated in the projects JEVis, IRON et. al. From April 2005 to march 2007 she entered a program to work as a research student in the Yakoh laboratory, Department of System Design Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University, Tôkyô, Japan. In July 2007 she completed her Ph.D. degree with the thesis „Adaptive Behavior Arbitration for Mobile service Robots in Building Automation“. At present she works as a free-lance researcher.

Gerhard Russ, born in 1971 in Graz, Austria, studied computer science at the Technical University of Vienna. The topic of his diploma thesis was the analysis of different sensor and actuator systems and the problems resulting from a cooperation of them. After graduating in 2000, he worked at the Institute of Computer Technology, Technical University of Vienna, as a research scientist. In 2003 he received a Ph.D. (Computer Science) for his work in designing a bionic model to improve the behavior of building automation systems: based upon biological methods and concepts a model architecture for automation systems was developed. Since 2003 he works as the area leader for Ambient Intelligence at ARC Seibersdorf research GmbH in Vienna. His application fields are the development of smart environments, autonomous and adaptive learning systems, and multimodal interfaces.

Thilo Sauter was born in Biberach, Germany, in 1967. He received his Dipl.-Ing. and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the Vienna University of Technology in 1992 and 1999, respectively. From 1992 to 1996 he was a research assistant at the Institute of General Electrical Engineering, working in the area of programmable logic and analog ASIC design. Since 1996, he has been with the Institute of Computer Technology, where he was head of the center of excellence for fieldbus systems and leading the factory communications group. He is member of the Austrian technical committee ÖVE MR65SC and delegate in the CENELEC committee TC65SC, both concerned with fieldbus standardization. His current research interests are integrated sensor systems and communication networks in automation, with a focus on interconnection issues of fieldbus systems and IP-based networks. Present teaching activities include fieldbus systems, fault tolerant systems, and the design of analog integrated circuits. Since 2004, he is head of the Research Unit for Integrated Sensor Systems established by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Won Seok Song is currently a researcher in I-Controls Co, Ltd. He received the Ph.D. degree in control and instrumentation engineering from Hanyang University, Korea. He has been made a research for implementation and analysis of BACnet protocol and building automation systems. He participated in localization for BACnet and ISO 16484 standard in Korea. He developed a BACnet protocol stack software and simulation models to investigate the characteristics of BACnet systems. He is interested in: performance analysis of industrial communication network systems using simulation and experimental models; analysis, design and implementation of building automation and control networks and home networking systems, as well as standardization of industrial communication networks.

Stefan Soucek was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1974. He received his Dipl.-Ing. and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, in 1999 and 2002, respectively. From 1999 to 2000 he was a research assistant at the Institute of Computer Technology, Vienna, Austria. From 2000 to 2002 he joined the development team for LonWorks/IP routers and control network systems at Coactive Networks, Inc., Calif., USA. Since 2002 he is head of development and research at LOYTEC, Vienna. His special research interests are fieldbus control systems over IP networks, protocol design, and design methods in embedded systems. Currently, he is working on applications in the control network/IP area, focusing on EIA-852 and BACnet. He has produced 20+ publications, books and patents in the field. Further, he is reviewer for IEEE transactions and international conferences and is active in standards development in building automation communications systems.

Albert Treytl received his master degree in electrical engineering (focus on computer technology) at the Vienna University of Technology. From 1996 to 2000 he led the development of a bank simulation programme for the Austrian government. End of 2000 he joined the Institute of Computer Technology as a research assistant in the area of energy management systems and security. The focus of his research lies on security of automation networks such as field busses and wireless ad-hoc networks. The topics of his research projects included web-based interfacing of energy management systems, electronic payment, smart card development and research, and the planning of security architectures. Currently he is responsible for the security architecture of the power line communication system designed within the European project REMPLI and working on security for reconfigurable automation networks.

Gerhard Zucker (né Gerhard Pratl) finished his PhD in April 2006. His research focuses on communication technology in industrial and building automation as well as the integration of classical building automation with psychological and neuropsychoanalytical models. He works in project ARS and project SENSE (funded by the European Commission), which are the two most relevant projects focussing on this direction of research.

After having studied in Berlin and Vienna, Sandrine von Klot received her Master Degree of Architecture at SCI ARC, Los Angeles (US) in 1996. In 1997 she became Cofounder of ´Escape*spHere´, an architectural practice based in Vienna. The evolving range of projects oscillated between technological research work, interactive installation work in various art context based locations (Ars Electronica Linz 01) and build projects in Vienna. (www.escapesphere.at) In cooperation with A.Fitz (cultural theorist) she curated the exhibition `Trespassing´ at the Secession in Vienna in 2002. Since 2003 she works in the context of `svk-architecture´, an architectural platform based in Vienna, which aims to link aspects of research, education and construction know-how. (www.svk-architecture.at) Since 1998 Sandrine von Klot has been teaching at various universities, in fall 2002 she became guest-professor at the southern Californian Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles. Currently doing research and teaching as assistant professor in the Department of Architecture Theory at the University of Technology Vienna. Schürer is also an architectural analyst, a curator of architecture events, a freelance author and an editor with numerous publications in Austria and abroad on digital technology and economics in architecture. His recent books include 'beyond the machine' and 'architektur:consulting'. Originally trained as master carpenter he studied architecture at the Technical University Vienna, graduated in 1999 with a diploma on the concepts of space and time in the work of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. In 2005, he received a doctorate in Architecture for his thesis on 'Automation and Empathy; Evolution of building automation from functionalist concepts to contemporary research concerning conscious systems'.

Pierre-Etienne Delon holds a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the "Ecole des Mines at St Etienne", France and spent two years in Germany specializing in Maths and Computer Science. He joined EDF R&D in 2003 and is a member of the I&C core team of EDF R&D working on the OPC Protocols, Webservices and Industrial Message System for the Power Systems. He is one the lead C++ software engineer at EDF R&D and his current interest among others is the XML Implementation in the Industrial Field.

Thomas Tamandl was born in 1979 in Vienna/Austria. After graduating in control engineering at the HTL-Donaustadt he studied electrical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. In 2005 he received his diploma. Since then he is staff member of the Institute of Computer Technology. His main research field is safety in automation control systems.
